Modular Sequencer Project

UPDATE: 04/04/07
new pictures of recased sequencer on bottom of page.

On paper it looked like it would work pretty easily. Reality proved a bit different. Changes were made on the fly after everything had been soldered. Now it is a mess inside. It has proved itself a valuable learning tool very things unexpected or not obvious on paper.
On this page are photos of the main toys ready to use and the sequencer and crossfader itself. Schematic and troubleshooting info is on page two.

owl drum

Owl Drum. Drumstick toy recased in Owl Educational toy. Toy has pitch control and "wet" signal modulation. Can still play stock sounds. 4 rca jacks are to connect to sequencer.

playskool drum

Playskool Drum. This came with pitch/tempo control which I increased the range of. 3 distortion switches can be combined or used independently. Can still play stock sounds.

modular sequencer and crossfader

Modular Sequencer with crossfader. Side rca jacks are relay controlled, and rca jacks on top are 4016 controlled. DIP switches (4 of 8 = 32 switches) set which output gets trigger. Because of circuit only use every other switch in a row so it is a 4 beat seq not 8 beat. Black knob is speed/beat control. Red LED shows speed of clock. White switch extends speed/beat control. Black rectangle is actually LEDs to match up with switches.
Crossfader. 1/4" jacks on right (Top to Bot) Output, Input, Input. Two black knobs control each input level. Shaft above 1/4" jacks is On/Off and output volume. Slide Pot selects which input to output. Super simple like a turntable crossfader. Circuit is slightly modified 741 based mixer into a 386 amp.

Basic simple configuration. One toy to seq output A another toy to seq output B. Each toy goes into crossfader input and the output goes to amp.

Audio samples
Sample 1 1.94 Mb Playskool drum by itself on seq.
Sample 2 1.28 Mb Owl drum by itself on seq.
Sample 3 1.88 Mb Owl drum by itself on seq.
Sample 4 2 Mb Playskool and Owl drums on seq through crossfader.
Sample 5 2.88 Mb Playskool and Owl drums on seq through crossfader.

Onto the guts.

<UPDATE>

Pictures of sequencer in new body.
I used household light switches for the switches. They are more economical, but also more of a pain to install into any enclosure.
The controls on the bottom end are power switch, tempo knob, and a switch for slower tempo.
The columns are for the four steps/beats. A green LED blinks when that column is triggered. The rows are for the four output triggers (ie kick, snare, tom, cymbal).
Here are some samples, now able to flip switches on the fly.
solo playskool drum 4.5 MB.
playskool & owl drums 1 6.6 MB.
playskool & owl drums 2 6.3 MB.
playskool & owl drums 3 4.5 MB.
